OKANOGAN COUNTY, Wash. -- A man was killed in a shooting near Malott Thursday, and the family of the person arrested told investigators the victim was a threat to them.
Deputies arrived on scene near Chiliwist Road around 3:45 p.m. and found the man’s body in a car. Jesus Vela-Duarte, 31, of Brewster was arrested in connection with the shooting.
The Sheriff’s Office said the victim, Antonio Naranjo-Menchaca, 38, of Omak and California, had just arrived in Okanogan County from California. Menchaca was the ex-brother-in-law of Duarte, authorities said, and had lived on and off in Okanogan County for several years. According to statements, Vela-Duarte's family was afraid of the victim.
Investigators said Duarte had already contacted Menchaca when he returned and told him to stay away from his family. When Duarte saw Menchaca drive by his home in Malott Thursday, he followed Menchaca down to Chiliwist Road along old Highway 97, according to the Sheriff's Office.
Authorities said Duarte stopped and confronted Menchaca. A witness said Duarte then pulled out a pistol and shot the other man two or three times. The Menchaca died at the scene.
Deputies said Duarte then drove back to his home in Malott, put the gun away and called 911 to report the shooting. Duarte told Deputies he was at his home and would be waiting for them, according to investigators. Deputies arrived and picked up Duarte without incident.
Old Highway 97 south of Malott was closed Thursday night while the scene was processed by the Okanogan Sheriff’s Office and the Washington State Patrol Crime Lab. The road was reopened around 10:30 p.m.
Duarte was transported to the Okanogan County Jail and booked for Murder in the Second Degree.
The investigation was still ongoing.
