SPOKANE VALLEY -- Police are using some new tactics to go after thieves.  The Spokane Valley Police Department created a special task force with the goal of reducing vehicle and garage prowlings.

Four deputies and two detectives are now part of a special task force in Spokane Valley focused solely on thieves and drug users.  Before the task force criminals were breaking into an average of 20 to 25 cars every week.  Now that number has fallen to about 10 to 14.

“We’re tired of people being victimized through car prowlings and garage thefts and they’ve gotta understand we take it very seriously and we’re going to arrest everyone we can,” said Sgt. John Nowels.

The team has arrested about 20 people and recovered dozens of stolen items.

The Spokane Valley Police Department will post stolen property on its website and Facebook page for people to identify.
