COLFAX, Wash-- A mental patient escaped from an ambulance headed to Eastern State Hospital on Sunday in Colfax.

Around 12:30 a.m.  Sunday, Deputies from the Whitman County Sheriff’s Office were requested to assist with a disorderly subject who was being transported from Asotin County to Eastern State Hospital via ambulance.

Asotin County EMS personnel called 911 to report that the subject being transported had broken his restraints, assaulted the ambulance driver and escaped from the back of the vehicle.

Shortly after escaping from the ambulance the subject reportedly fled to a nearby farmhouse on Klaveano Rd. where he allegedly threw a rock through a window on the home and then fled into a nearby field.

Officers from Colfax PD, WSP and the Spokane County Sheriff’s Helicopter were called in to assist with the search. The subject was located a short time later, hiding under a bridge near the intersection of Klavenano Rd. and Ragon Rd. Deputies utilized the TASER to safely take the subject into custody.

Deputies arrested Jason M. Hundrup, 41, of Asotin on charges of 3rd Degree Assault, and 2 Counts of Malicious Mischief. Hundrup was booked into the Whitman County Jail and was expected to have his first appearance Monday.
