SPOKANE, Wash. -- One man suffered serious injuries when he was stabbed by a family member, according to Spokane Police.
Officers responded to the scene in the 1800 block of West Dean just after 11 p.m. Thursday.
They arrived to find a man in his 50s lying in bed with a stab wound to the chest.
Police used a K-9 to track the suspect. They found 21-year-old Joel M. Arevalo, the victim’s step-grandson, a short distance away from the man’s apartment.
Arevalo faces assault and burglary charges. A judge set Arevalo’s bond at $75,000 on Fridat afternoon. Arevalo allegedly slashed the tires outside of the home and forced his way inside before stabbing the victim.
“Basically, a domestic dispute spiraled out of control very quickly. Exactly how it happened so fast, or why it happened that way, isn’t exactly clear. We’ll have to interview him to get ideas as to what he was thinking at the time,” Ofc. Brian Eckersley of the Spokane Police Department said.
Police have not yet recovered the knife used in the assault.
The victim is in serious condition, but his injuries do not appear to be life-threatening.
