SPOKANE, Wash. -- The Spokane Police Department released the name of a Spokane police officer who shot and killed a suspect. Authorities indentified the officer as Adam Valdez. Investigators with the Washington State Patrol said that Valdez is a six year veteran.

The suspect, Jacob I. Dorfman, was shot and killed on Tuesday in south Spokane following a pursuit. Dorman died at the scene near 8th and Adams. An autopsy showed that the 52-year-old died from gunshot wounds.

Officers pursued Dorfman on foot until he hopped into a vehicle. The man led officers on a short pursuit as he drove through yards and fences. The chase ended after about 5 minutes in the Huckleberry’s along Monroe.

The details surrounding the shooting remain unclear. Witnesses told KREM 2 News that they saw Spokane officers stop Dorfman with their car using a PIT maneuver.  They reportedly heard close to a dozen shots fired right after. Officers recovered the Dorfman's handgun at the scene.

None of the officers involved were injured.

Valdez will be on standard paid time off while the Washington State Patrol conducts an investigation into the shooting.

The Spokane Police Department released additional details about Valdez on Thursday afternoon. He was nominated for City Employee of the Month in 2008 according to Officer Jennifer DeRuwe. She added that Valdez received awards for his service in 2010 and 2012.
