PEND OREILLE COUNTY--An inmate escaped from the Pend Oreille County Jail on Wednesday afternoon.
Ryan A. Apling, 29, was being held for failure to appear on original charges of Criminal Trespass 2nd Degree, and Driving While License Suspended 3rd Degree with a bond of $10,000.
Apling escaped from the recreation yard by scaling several fences with razor wire, according to police. They added it was also apparent from blood in the snow that Apling received injuries from the fencing and razor wire.
Pend Oreille County deputies were assisted by Bonner County deputies and the U.S. Border Patrols K-9 Unit in searching for Apling. Apling was tracked for several miles before his trail was lost.
Apling is described as 5’10”, 140lbs, with blue eyes and blonde short hair. He was last seen wearing a black hoodie and blue jeans.
Apling was originally wearing orange jail issued garments and at some point changed his clothing. His top was recovered outside the jail fencing.
The Newport Schools were immediately placed on lockdown for several hours during the incident.
The Pend Oreille County Sheriff’s Office is seeking assistance from the public in locating Apling. If seen please call the Sheriff’s Office at 509-447-1980.
