SPOKANE, Wash.--increased police presence at Hoopfest is increases costs.  Hoopfest leaders estimated that security at the upcoming three-on-three basketball tournament will cost an extra $20,000 this summer.

Police Chief Frank Straub said Hoopfest’s security budget is usually based on prior years. Straub said the 2013 Hoopfest budget is based on the past few months.

“This year because of Boston and prior events, we feel it's important to dial up the security and the protection of these events,” said Straub. “So we are going above and beyond what we budgeted for.”

Straub said Hoopfest players and spectators can expect to more specialized forces including the bomb squad and SWAT members. Both groups staged off-site in previous years and were on standby.  Straub said both groups will be available immediately in the event of a crisis this year.

“It's just not a terrorist event per say, it could be people that just come down and want to disrupt the games and in someway make a statement,” said added Straub. “We want to be able to head those people off or be able to react to it very quickly.”

SPD leaders said they estimate Hoopfest security to cost $81,000.  It is a $20,000 increase from 2012.

Department leaders expect to be partially reimbursed. Hoopfest traditionally pays 60% of security costs.
