SPOKANE – The Gonzaga University law student accused of driving drunk, hitting a toddler and taking off was released from jail Tuesday.
22-year-old Timmy Nguyen appeared in court Tuesday and pleaded not guilty. Nguyen made bail and was released wearing an ankle monitor.
Officials say the girl’s father was towing her in a bike trailer, when an SUV came speeding around the corner of Argonne onto Maringo Drive, crossed onto the wrong side of the street and running over the trailer.
According to court documents, the driver didn’t stop. A witness followed the vehicle to a nearby apartment complex. The witness asked the driver, identified as Nguyen, if he knew what he just did. Nguyen replied “yeah” and swore at him.
When a deputy arrived, he smelled a strong scent of alcohol on Nguyen. When Nguyen was asked to talk about the previous five minutes, Nguyen replied “I don’t remember.”
The toddler was treated for a skull and wrist fracture, but she’s doing okay. Her father wasn’t hurt.
Last week a judge set Nguyen’s bond at $10,000, but it will be waived if he wears an alcohol detection bracelet while he awaits future court hearings.
