SPOKANE, Wash. -- A man, who admitted to setting his ex-girlfriend’s car on fire, blamed his actions on a broken heart.
Matthew Radeck made his first court appearance Monday afternoon.
Firefighters responded to the Hilby Station Apartments near South Palouse Highway and 57th early Saturday morning after neighbors reported a white sedan had gone up in flames.
The car parked next to it also suffered damage.
The flames came very close to a tree and could have spread to a nearby apartment unit, but crews were able to contain the fire before it grew.
Witnesses reported seeing a man running from the scene.
In a jail house interview with KREM 2 News, Radek said he experienced an ‘emotional overload’ because he recently lost his job, his apartment, and his relationship.
“I've spent every second since I've been [in jail] kicking myself and asking myself, ‘what possessed me to do that?’ This is the worst thing I've ever done in my entire life,” he said.
Radek denied being under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time. He said he was hurt, and his broken heart over-ruled his head.
“I would just like to extend my most sincere deepest apologies. I have no excuse for my actions or for the damage that I caused,” he said.
26-year-old Radek is charged with 2nd Degree Arson. A judge set his bail at $20,000.
