KOOTENAI COUNTY, Idaho -- The Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the alleged embezzlement of public funds from the City of Athol.

The City of Athol entered into a contract for a forensic audit to be conducted of their accounts. An accurate dollar loss amount will not be known until the audit is complete.

Officials said former City Clerk, Sally R. Hansen has been listed as a person of interest in the case. Detectives said Hansen is no longer in the area.

The Sheriff’s Office said they received a letter on July 11 from a Coeur d’Alene legal firm that said they have been retained as counsel for Hansen and she “will be exercising her right to remain silent.”

Detectives are continuing to work closely with Athol Mayor, Darla Kuhman to further the investigation.
