SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. -- The Spokane Valley Sheriff arrested two people Thursday night after they peeled out of a parking lot in front of a deputy.
Deputies say the man was driving a black Ford Mustang. When he was pulling out of a parking lot onto Hutchinson, he revved his engine and the tires lost traction. He continued to accelerate and lost control of the car. The car did a 180 degree spin in the middle of the road. The driver lost control, crossed into the southbound lane and hit a curb.
The nearby deputy pulled behind the car to conduct a traffic stop. The driver, Steven Root, 40, told the deputy he was borrowing the car from a friend and couldn't explain his reckless driving.
Officials say Root's driving privileges were suspended to the 3rd degree and was arrested on 4 misdemeanor warrants for failure to appear on previous driving while suspended charges.
The passenger in the car, Nicole Kersey, 27, was also arrested after deputies found syringes and a baggie with a black tar like substance the deputy recognized as heroin. Deputies also found a white crystalline substance that was identified as methamphetamine. Kersey also had hard plastic "brass knuckles" and a folding knife.
Root was booked on the previous warrants and was issued criminal citations for reckless driving and driving while license suspended.
Kersey was booked on 2 felony charges of possession of a controlled substance and a misdemeanor charge of possession of a dangerous weapon.
Root and Kersey were both transported to the Spokane County Jail.
