SPOKANE-- Graffiti cases are down overall in Spokane, but one spot keeps getting tagged.
Police call the skate park on 3rd and McClellan a magnet for taggers, saying it’s one of the worst spots in town. Pillars there are coated in layers of paint.
Some nearby business owners say their walls, inside and out, have the same unfortunate marks. Cozzetto’s Cleaners is just one of the shops close to the park with graffiti.
“They want the best sign they can find. Most of the time, that’s the side of a nice building,” Owner Steve Cozzetto
City ordinance requires those buildings to be cleaned within 10 days of a hit, or they face a $513 fine.
“My office continually communicates with the Parks and Recreation Department about all the problems we have at the skate park,” Graffiti Abatement Officer Eric Walker said. “They come down and cover up graffiti around the outer walls, but the problems sit inside the skate park.”
The Parks and Rec. Department said they try to stay on top of the crimes, but it can be weeks in between each visit to the park.
An upcoming remodel of the park is reportedly holding the department back from completely cleaning the space. The details of the remodel have not been released.
