Seattle police have arrested Michael Sean Stanley, a violent sex offender who fled Canada to Seattle earlier this month, for harassment.

Seattle police say around 6 a.m. Tuesday, police received reports that a man was yelling in an alley in the 2300 block of 44th Avenue SW in West Seattle. One caller said when he asked the man to quiet down, the man threatened to assault him.

When police arrived, they found Stanley in an apparent state of intoxication. He became combative with officers and claimed he had a knife.

Police found the knife on Stanley and took him into custody. They booked him into the King County Jail for harassment.

Stanley cut off his electronic monitoring bracelet in Canada earlier this month. Officials there issued a public alert describing Stanley as an untreated, violent Level 3 sex offender who posed a significant risk.

He crossed the border into the United States and was found by Seattle police Thursday, but officers could not arrest him because he is currently not wanted for anything in the U.S. However, recently had him register as a sex offender in Seattle.

Stanley has a history of sexual offenses in Canada dating back to 1987 as well as a history of taking children from playgrounds. Stanley spent nine years in prison for aggravated assault of an 82-year-old woman in a wheelchair. He was also sentenced in 2006 for assault and unlawful confinement after luring two mentally impaired boys to an apartment.

Canadian justice officials say they won’t try to extradite Stanley. He already served his time in prison before being placed on GPS monitoring. Alberta prosecutors say the crimes Stanley is currently wanted for in Canada don’t involve violence, so it doesn’t warrant an extradition.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
