SPOKANE, Wash.-- Food stamps, sex, a Blu-ray player, and drugs led to a deadly Hillyard shooting Tuesday morning according to court documents.

Brandon J. Compogno, 30, died Tuesday night when he was shot multiple times according to the Spokane County Medical Examiner who listed the cause of death as a “homicide.”
Compogno was fatally shot near Sinto and Napa.

Authorities questioned and released the suspect Wednesday afternoon. Court documents identified the suspect as Joseph “Sebastian” Buskirk.

The suspect claimed that he shot Compogno in self-defense according to authorities. Buskirk told detectives that he went to sell Compogno's girlfriend roxy pills in exchange for sex, food stamps and a Blu-ray player.

Court documents stated that Compogno punched Buskirk twice during the exchange. Detectives said that was backed up with cuts and bruises on the suspect’s face. Authorities said both men were armed during the fight.

Buskirk admitted to firing between three and six shots when Compogno threatened to "blow his brains out."

The woman at the center of the exchang admitted to meeting  Buskirk at Deja Vu. She told authorities that she and Buskirk planned to have sex before things got deadly.

Police originally believed the shooting was gang related and called in a gang unit to aid in the investigation.  Later Wednesday, detectives said gang ties appeared not to have been involved in the incident. However, police are investigating if the deceased man was affiliated with a gang.
