SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. -- A 29-year-old man was arrested Wednesday morning after deputies say he was drunk and tried to flee from them.

A Spokane Valley Deputy saw a 2003 Chevy Impala traveling eastbound on Broadway had hit a curb. The car came to a complete stop right in front of the officer's car. The deputy then followed the car and saw it weaving and at one point, it crossed into oncoming traffic.

The deputy attempted to stop the car, then the car sped up. The suspect tried to evade the deputy by turning onto residential streets going over 50 miles per hour. The car turned onto Alki Avenue, which is a dead end, and came to a stop.

The driver, Cody Staley, 29, got out of his car and began running through the backyard with the deputy chasing him.

Staley tripped and the deputy was able to arrest him during a short struggle.

The deputy could smell alcohol coming from Staley and he admitted he had been drinking but refused sobriety evaluations and breath samples.

He was charged with felony attempting to elude and misdemeanor charges of driving while intoxicated and obstructing a peace officer.

Staley was booked and transported to the Spokane County Jail.
