SPOKANE, Wash.--A local businessman is offering hundreds of dollars in cash or free tacos to the person who helps police catch a gas thief.
The owner of De Leon Foods on West Francis made the offer Monday. Sergio De Leon said surveillance video recently captured a man siphoning gas out his freight truck and it is not the first time.
De Leon even installed a locking gas cap on his truck, but it was not enough.
“It angers me because it costs me money as it is in our business, it's not easy to stay in business,” said De Leon.
The business owner uses the freight trucks to deliver supplies to his restaurants and grocery store. He said that he noticed a big drop in his fuel gauge about one week ago.
Video recorded last Tuesday showed a man back in between De Leon's two trucks. The man gets out a knife and walks around to the gas cap.
“He cut the hose, and guess he knows where everything's at,” said De Leon. “I think he has a pump because you are gonna see he actually raises the hood connects something, so I think he's equipped with some kind of pump.”
De Leon estimated that the suspected thief siphoned more than 15 gallons of gas in five minutes.
The suspect left in what appears to be an older model Chevy pick-up. The truck appears to have a two-toned blue hood and a yellow top.
De Leon said he is also upset about the recent graffiti on his trucks and building. He is offering $600 or $600worth of free tacos for the person who helps police nab the gas thief or the person whoever has vandalized the property.
