MANTECA, Calif. – Three vintage Tillamook Cheese Volkswagen microbuses, along with a truck and trailer, were stolen from a California parking lot early Saturday morning. The truck and trailer were found on fire Sunday, but the buses are still missing, officials said.
The bright orange VW buses, truck and trailer were on a public relations trip for the Oregon cheese company when they were taken from a Hampton Inn parking lot between 12:30 a.m. and 6:30 a.m., according to Sgt. Rob Armosino of Manteca police.
Tori Harms, spokeswoman for Tillamook Cheese, said the Loaf Tour team was promoting the cheese in Sacramento when the buses were stolen.
"We are working closely with local Sacramento-area authorities, who are currently investigating the case," she said.
When the vehicles were stolen, the three fully restored microbuses were inside the trailer attached to the Ford F350 truck.
Around 12:30 a.m. Sunday, the truck and trailer were found engulfed in flames, but the buses were still missing, Armosino said.
A 1964 bus has the Oregon license plate YUM4, a 1966 bus has the plate YUM5 and the 1959 model the plate YUM6.
Tillamook was offering a $10,000 reward for the safe recovery of the microbuses.
Anyone with information about the vehicles was asked to call Manteca police at 209-456-8101 or Crime Stoppers at 209-823-4636.
