SPOKANE, Wash. -- Car thefts are up 44 percent for the first three months of 2013 in Spokane.

One car was stolen downtown on average every three days this March. The suspects are often never caught.

Police said they increase patrols anytime they identify a ‘hotspot’  but it’s a crime that’s hard to stay ahead of.

Officials said the ‘hotspots’ include the lower South Hill, a stretch of apartments and homes in North Spokane and neighborhoods near Garry Park.  However, no area of town is escaping the problem.

Authorities said the city is heading into prime car theft season. They recommend that you roll up your windows and lock your doors every time you leave your car.
