SPOKANE, Wash. – Spokane Major Crimes Detectives are investigating a fatal shooting in North Spokane.
The Spokane County Medical Examiner's Office identified the victim as Julian Morrison, 26. An autopsy showed Morrison died from gunshot wounds.
Spokane Police said officers found Morrison dead in the parking lot outside The Hop concert venue near Monroe and Broadway, after they responded to a call for shots fired around 12 a.m. Monday. Authorities said they were on the scene within two minutes of the call.
Those close to Morrison said he was about to become a father. Friends said he was committed to getting his life back on track.
Spokane Police Lieutenant Dean Sprague said there were dozens of people in the area when officers responded, and that they had varying stories about what happened. Officials said the Gang Unit was called in to help investigate.
“We’re looking at a lot of different statements and following up with a lot of different tips that have been given to us so far,” Sprague said.
Witnesses said they heard yelling in the parking lot followed by at least seven gunshots. Morrison was pronounced dead at the scene.
The General Manager of The Hop said they were hosting an after party for a performance at another venue. The owner said to his knowledge the other performance was cancelled. He said the bar regulars were overwhelmed by the new crowd just before the shooting.
"Last night was just a different environment. It was about 95 percent we didn't know and had never seen before," said Owner, Thomas Chavez.
Spokane Police have not identified a suspect but have dedicated a great deal of resources to the case.
Lincoln St. between Bridge and Broadway is blocked off for the investigation.
