SPOKANE-- The City of Spokane announced Wednesday single stream recycling is coming this fall.

Single stream recycling means Spokane residents will be able to put all their recyclables into one bin. The City hopes this process will increase the number of people choosing to recycle.

According to officials, the new system will cost the City about $8 million to set up and get running. They said half of that cost is going to replace old recycling trucks with new automated ones.  Officials added the old trucks were scheduled to be replaced regardless of the city’s recycling system.

City officials estimates the new system will increase participation in curbside recycling by about 50% and increase the amount of recycled material by 75%. These changes are estimated to save the city about $936,000 a year in disposal costs and earn an additional $400,000 in revenue.

Customers will begin receiving new blue 64-gallon recycling carts near the end of September. Single stream service starts October 1.
