NORTH SPOKANE-- Costco and other big box stores that sell liquor will face new competition soon. The country's largest, independently-owned liquor retailer hopes to bring its business to Spokane.

People should be able to buy booze near the North Point Plaza shopping center soon.

Total Wine opened a store in Bellevue Washington Thursday.

The retailer touts itself ‘Costco's worst nightmare’.

In a phone interview a company spokesperson explained, “We are extremely competitive with Costco. For us we want to always be the price leader as does Costco…when we say we are going to bring it to Costco, we're gonna compete on price”

Total Wine says it also competes on selection offering 13,000 different alcoholic beverages.

Bud Kirihara, owner of Millwood Liquor off East Trent, says it's difficult to compete with the buying power of the big box that gets alcohol cheaper with bulk purchase.

Total Wine and More hopes to open in Spokane by early fall.
