SPOKANE, Wash.-- New businesses are opening their doors in north Spokane.

Car dealerships and furniture stores say the area just north of the “Y” need the new development and they say now is the time.

The new Barton dealership and Ashley Furniture store are now opening to shoppers on North Newport Highway.

They’re counting on bigger sales and brighter days in 2013.

The idea’s been 10 years in the making for Jeff Barton.

“Interest rates were right, land sellers made us a good offer on the property, and it was a good fit,” he says.

Barton owns the Chrysler Dodge Jeep and Ram dealership. He was born into the car business and always wanted to expand. Now, as Spokane recovers from the recession, he’s ready for business to boom.

Across the car lot, Ashley Furniture is back in business. This time, under new ownership.

The building’s sat empty for more than a year-and-a-half. The new buyers say the community needs the store, and they’re stocking the floor.

“Why not, when we’re going into the big upswing, get in? Before the big boom and five years down the road, when the economy is back together, we’re already established,” Ashley Business Manager Jaime Johnson said.

Both businesses hope to be busy in the new year. They’ve each added about 30 fulltime positions.
