SPOKANE -- Two people are left homeless after a fire ripped through the attic of their home. It happened on the 13-hundred block of West Cleveland in Northwest Spokane just before 10:30 a.m. Saturday.
Firefighters say this is typically the time of year when they get busy responding to house fires. A lot of them, they say, are caused by things used to heat a home. A man who lived at the house, Ken MComb, was at work at the time. He got the call from his girlfriend.
Many Saturday nights you'll find Ken McComb doing stand-up comedy. But this Saturday night will be no different, except he does not have a home to come to. McComb says he must stay positive for his girlfriend. But he is unsure about the days ahead.
"It was snowing last night, we got rain coming, the weather is about to turn and all of a sudden, I got the roof open," said McComb.
Firefighters say this is typically the time of year they see a large increase in house fires. The say the fire on West Cleveland started in the attic. The only thing McComb says he can think could have started it is faulty electrical wiring.
McComb says he had many old comic books in the attic that were probably destroyed. But he suspects firefighters may have been able to save a lot of his belongings that were on the first level. The Red Cross is helping with temporary housing.
