SPOKANE -- A year-and-a-half long federal drug investigation has resulted in the arrests of 24 rival gang members who are facing more than 40 criminal charges .

Prosecutors say members of the Crips and Gangster Disciples pushed drugs, which included the likes of methamphetamine, cocaine, and a drug called 'nemesis'; an amphetamine.

One gang associate was charged with two counts of coercing underage girls to participate in prostitution, according to authorities. That attempt was generated by Internet advertisements.

The previously sealed indictments were returned on June 24 by a federal grand jury.

Twenty of the 24 defendants made their base of operation in Spokane while the remaining four were located in Seattle and Tacoma, according to authorities.

"Far too many Spokane residents are subject to the influence of gangs and the damage they inflict on our community," said Spokane Police Chief Anne Kirkpatrcik. We will not allow this, and so the fight against the crime that gangs breed will remain one of the top priorities of the Spokane Police Department.

Federal agents and local law enforcement officers begain raiding homes across Spokane late Tuesday and early Wednesday as part of their crackdown on gang activity.

Tom Rice with the U.S. Attorney's Office confirmed the suspects are wanted on drug and weapons charges.

The drug distribution charges carry potential sentences of up to 20 years in prison; firearm offenses carry up to 10 years and cocercing juveniles into prostitution carries up to 20 years.
