CHATTAROY, WA. -- Firefighters put out a fire at a mobile home on Dennison-Chattaroy Road in Chattaroy Thursday morning.

The fire broke out around 9:30 a.m.  Chattaroy-Dennison Road was closed in both directions while firefighters investigated.

The Red Cross says they are helping two adults, a husband and wife who lived in the mobile home.  The wife was in the home when the fire started and was taken to a hospital for observation.  The house is a total loss.  Red Cross volunteers are working with the couple to provide temporary housing and assistance.

The home had a large stash of ammunition inside it. The owner said he had about 700 rounds stored. When the fire started, several of those rounds ignited, and exploded outside the house.

A passerby who was getting a closer look at the fire was grazed by one of those bullets. It gently hit her, leaving no mark.  She said she kept the bullet.

Fire investigators still do not know what caused the fire.

Mythbusters did the tests with from a .22 up to a 50 cal Nato round in a oven. The only one that was lethal was a round that was chambered in a pistol. Here's the link... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7BX1kvJVrjc

Bullets dont fly out of fires, I gotta call BS on this one. Physics tells us that the heavy part of the cartridge, the bullet, will pretty much stay put. Go to SAMMI.org and look it up I did. The only time bullets fly around in a fire is if they are chambered in a firearm when they cook off the rest of the time the cases just rupture and a little shrapnel flys around. Ammo cooking off is not a danger to firefighters in a fire.

I don't know maybe step back a little from the burning trailer? I think the propane tank on my gas grill would hurt a lot more than an ammo stash if it blew up.

If I remember correctly, the Mythbusters did their tests with .22 caliber rounds, not something like this. From the looks of it, it appears to be either a .40 caliber or .45caliber. Much bigger than a .22 caliber round. Also, I really think it depends how far away she was. Bullets do lose a lot of speed whilst flying.

The velocity of the round wouldn't have gone too far past where it was ignited. Mythbusters did an episode on that and if it would have hit her it would have been like a thrown stone... I call BS!

Somehow, I have a very hard time believing that 700 rounds of ammunition could have caused the fire. Also all ammunition is "explosive". That bullet she is holding is just a normal handgun round, nothing special.

Gee, what in the world could have caused the fire? I dunno, MAYBE 700 ROUNDS OF EXPLOSIVE AMMUNITION?!
