Better Business Bureau warns of charity scams

BBB urges public to be aware of charity scams 911-28-17)

SPOKANE, Wash.— Scammers could be renaming “Giving Tuesday” to “Taking Tuesday.”

Kirsten Davis with the Better Business Bureau said this year charity fraud is bigger than ever.

Davis said the BBB received over 100 more charity fraud reports on its scam tracker than last year.

Davis warned that scammers take advantage of people’s confusion when it comes to determining what charities are legitimate and what ones are not.

"Some of the things that we see happen are look-alike sites, different things like that, crowdfunding sites can be an issue, so you just want to do your research,” said Davis.

Davis said the best way a person can tell if a charity is real or a scam is to use the Better Business Bureau’s “scam tracker” on the BBB website.
