MEDICAL LAKE, Wash. -- A Medical Lake woman who works with at-risk teenagers said she cut off communications with the teenage suspect in a brutal attack after he threatened to kill her.

Spokane Police arrested 17-year-old Avondre Graham Thursday. He is accused of assaulting a woman with a club near the Centennial Trail by Mission park.

Police are also looking at Graham as a person of interest in a stabbing murder in the same area back in May. Officers said Graham matches the description murder victim Sharlott McGill gave of her attacker shortly before she died of her stab wounds.

Carmen Jett runs a horse rescue in Medical Lake. She met Avondre Graham two years ago while he attended Bancroft Alternative School. Jett described Graham as confused and angry, but a good kid who worked hard at her ranch.

"He said that he was having problems because he got picked on a lot," Jett said.

Jett said her relationship with Graham soured last summer after he threatened to kill her. She said she did not believe he was serious at the time. After his arrest Thursday, Jett said her view on the situation changed.

“I’m terrified, you know? It’s not the same world anymore,” she said.

Jett said she is disappointed Graham did not get the help he needs, but she is more determined than ever to continue helping troubled youth.
