SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) -- Flooding shut down two stretches of Highway north of Sprague early Thursday.  Both roadways were reopened later in the morning.

Highway 231 was closed between Sprague and Edwall because of water and mud over the roadway.  Highway 23 was shut down between Sprague and Harrington.

Department of Transportation crews later opened up Highway 23 at Sprague since water, which had been 2 ft deep in some places, receded enough by 6 a.m.  Meanwhile, on Highway 231, crews were out with brooms cleaning mud off the road into the morning.  At milepost 13, water had completely washed away the shoulder of the highway.  Highway 231 was reopened around 8 a.m.

Rainy weather was expected to continue into next week in the Inland Northwest, with forecasters predicting a possible sunbreak Friday.
