SPOKANE -- Hundreds, possibly thousands, of students plan to walk out of class at colleges and universities across Washington state Thursday.

The financial crisis delivered quite a blow to colleges and universities last year. Here in the Inland Northwest, Eastern Washington University alone reports losing $5 million.

All the money lost led to hiring freezes and other set backs at the school. And, now even more cuts are proposed, which students say could lead to more staffing cuts and larger classroom sizes.

So, EWU students, and even some staff members, are saying it's time to send a message to Olympia. They're planning a rally to protest tuition increases and other budget cuts from noon until 2:00 p.m.

And the Eastern Washington students aren't alone. Students at Washington State University and University of Washington are planning similar events.

The students tell us if they can get together an organized protest against budget cuts, they can show lawmakers they're not meeting the needs of many of the state's citizens.

I think that we need to take the profits out of schooling. As it is, thy go to school, then get out and get a job that might pay their tuition. The first thing on the chopping block should be the size of government, and then their wages. However, it's just a good thing that we have such a great president. Just think of how horrible it would be if he had lost with no unemployment insurance and school grants. Just think of the homeless!

I am a student at EWU and the comments I see posted here confirm my fears. I missed less than half an hour of my Ethics and Women class to support the availability of an education for those who can't afford one without financial aid, and I know how to spell it. I turned in my work that was due and still had time to cover the inequity of stereotyping and prejudice. I am grateful for the opportunity to seek arete and give back to the community that supported me. These responses substantiate the need for education.

A community without an education lacks the infrastructure needed to be productive and forward thinking. The Dark Ages were a period of ignorance and superstition that lead to mayhem and oppression. How long do they think America will continue to be a hegemony if our educational system becomes akin to third world countries. Education is the path to paradigm shifts which shed light and expose human despair and cruelty that is fostered in the obscurity darkness.

American children simply have it too easy nowadays. Send them all to the Eastern front so they can guard "our" oil fields, and then they can come back to America and get their college eduation while they supervise Hispanics and Africans who are on probation. Har har har har. Or maybe if they are real good little kids we will let them drop bombs on AfPak villages by remote control . . . No big cry from college kids about stopping our immoral, and criminally illegal, wars; just them complaining about how unfair life is: har har har har! Our lack of humanity shall end "our" American empire! Amen

If these students have time to protest, instead of being in class learning, then it's time to cut financial aid even further. Any student who doesn't know how to spell, by the time they reach post-secondary, shouldn't be given aid either.
