SPOKANE COUNTY—An East Valley substitute teacher accused of roughing up four sixth-grade students at Trent Elementary school could face additional felony charges.

The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office forwarded its criminal charging recommendations to the Spokane County Prosecutor’s office Tuesday. The recommended charges include one count of Third Degree Assault, ten counts of Fourth Degree Assault and 18 counts of Unlawful Imprisonment.

The prosecutor will decide whether to charge

Students said Matthew Deryan smelled of alcohol, swore at them and called them names in the January 17 incident.

The 46-year-old substitute teacher denied the accusations, saying the students made it up because he gave them pink slips.

His trial was set for April 21.
