SPOKANE, Wash. – A Spokane homeowner was the target of an elaborate prank Monday night.
Someone covered a yard with 50 roadside construction cones that were stolen from a nearby sidewalk construction project.
Spokane street crews are not surprised whe one or two orange cones went missing. Roadside workers said they accept the random pranks as part of the job. On Monday night, 110 cones went missing and half of them ended up in a front yard.
Workers said when more than 100 cones go missing from a single construction site it becomes a safety concern.
“A lot of times when we have the traffic cones out it’s for a reason. When you move them off of obstructions like that, somebody can walk in them at night or a bike can go through,” said Michael Beggs with Spokane Traffic Control.
Crews on Northwest Boulevard were told to keep an eye out for the cones Tuesday morning after they went missing. Spokane Traffic Control quickly got replacements up but nobody knew where the cones and caution signs went. Later, a concrete worker got an unlikely tip.
“I got home later that night, received a Snapchat from a friend and it was a video of a bunch of cones in the front yard,” said David Kruger.
The video helped crews find 50 cones. There are still 60 cones and 14 road barricades missing.
Spokane Traffic Control leaders plan to file a police report to find the pranksters responsible for the $4,700 in stolen property.
