SPOKANE, Wash. - It always seems to be hot by the time Hoopfest rolls around in Spokane - but this year looks like it will be a scorcher.
It is important, of course, to use sunscreen and stay hydrated during the tournament, but the Fire Department is also reminding people to drink plenty of liquids in the days leading up to Hoopfest.
"Hydrating now is going to prevent or could possibly prevent a tragedy or serious illness on Saturday, Sunday," said Brian Schaeffer with the Spokane Fire Department.
The weather is expected to be at least ten degrees higher than the average for Hoopfest weekend so emergency crews want to be prepared.
“We’re expecting to be extremely busy,” Schaeffer said. “This is one of the hottest, most anticipated Hoopfests we’ve seen in recent history…now we’re going to add extra teams, added a bus that has the ability to do active cooling.”
In addition to staying hydrated it is also important to avoid coffee and other caffeinated drinks leading up to Hoopfest.
