SPOKANE, Wash. -- A suspicious fire forced the evacuation of an apartment building in the middle of the night in North Spokane.
Fire crews said a fire on the first floor of the Hamilton House Apartments on Hamilton and Boone spread from an electrical room to a laundry room around midnight Wednesday.
Crews arrived and quickly knocked down the flames, but the first floor of the complex filled with smoke. The laundry and storage rooms were badly damaged, authorities said.
Firefighters responding to the blaze were concerned because many of the residents had physical disabilities, but all the residents managed to get out of the complex safely. Tenants were allowed back into the building after about an hour.
It was not known what caused the fire. The special investigative unit of the Spokane Fire Department launched an investigation into the incident.
