SPOKANE--A University High School student denies flashing a gun during a Spokane Valley fight.  The student admits to having a handgun but says he never had it with him after school.

Benjamin Washington is charged with unlawful possession of a firearm.  His bail has been set at $25,000.

Washington says he went to Brown’s Park across the street from University High School where a group had gathered to watch a fight between two people.  He says one of them was his friend.

According to court documents, several witnesses told authorities that Washington removed a handgun from the glove compartment of a car and put it in his waistband.  The documents go on to say he held the butt of the gun through his shirt.

The crowd eventually dispersed and a deputy interviewed four witnesses who identified Washington.

Washington says a SWAT team showed up at his home early the next morning and he told officers he owned a gun.

The school district won’t comment on the disciplinary actions taken against Washington, but say it’s protocol.
