SPOKANE, Wash.--Professional and amateur photographers alike were taking advantage of Spokane’s natural scenery in March.

One man is doing things a little different than other photographers. Stephen Alkire has only taken pictures for a year or so but he said he has gotten a lot of recognition for how he takes them.

“I'm a self-taught photographer. So, I just found photographers that I liked, and I imitated them,” said Alkire.

He said he really just wanted to keep up with his wife, Lisa, who takes pictures professionally.

“I kinda did it to impress her, to be honest,” said Alkire.

Now he is the one impressing everyone with the pictures he takes on his iPhone.

“I can shoot any day, everywhere I go. And it's helped me improve faster because it's always available. It's always easy,” said Alkire.

A photo Alkire took at Colchuck Lake near Leavenworth was selected as one of the top ten in the Northwest by a gallery in Seattle.

“Actually, a lot of the people I was standing next to were people I have looked up to,” said Alkire.

“You know, what I've been doing my entire life is shooting photos with DSLR cameras, and investing in really expensive equipment. But he's doing things that you can walk up to somebody and say, I'm doing that with what you have in your pocket,” said Alkire’s wife, Lisa Alkire.

Akire said he uses two free iPhone apps to edit his pictures.

Akire has 40,000 followers on Instagram and counting.

“I can tell a story with a photo, and it has a certain mood and emotion that comes out of it. It's just really captured my heart and it's what makes me passionate about it,” said Alkire.

Akire and his wife said they hope Akire’s success will eventually translate to enough business that they can do photography as their full time career.
