SPOKANE—The search is expanding to find the next police chief for the Spokane Police Department.

Mayor David Condon said he is not satisfied with the candidates who have applied so far.  City officials have worked to find a new chief since former chief Anne Kirkpatrick resigned in November.  So far, only a dozen people have applied for the position.

Condon said he wants to make sure citizens approve of the chief before offering them a position.  City spokeswoman Marlene Feist said the twelve applicants come from all over the country.  Officials said candidates are not required to have chief experience.

The city plans to reopen the search this week for applicants.  There is no planned hire date.
