SPOKANE, Wash. -- Convicted murdered Louis (Hanson) Montoya will spend the rest of his life behind bars.

That is what a judge handed down early Thursday in a Spokane courtroom.

There was a massive security presence at the sentencing with uniformed and undercover officers.  This is in response to alleged threats Montoya has made in jail.

In an earlier court date, the jury returned a guilty verdict.  Hanson was convicted of shooting and killing Aaron Cummings on New Year’s Eve in 2012.  Authorities said the shooting was gang related.  After the verdict was read, Montoya made a shooting motion and noise toward the victim’s family.

"I have dreams, nightmares where I hear the gunshot.  Sometimes I just want to lay down and die,” said the victim’s mom Crystal Amos.  "It's like my soul is missing."

Even after all the pain, Crystal said their family is working to forgive Montoya.
“I want his family to know that we both have lost children,” said Amos.  “I watched his mother come in here and cry. “I pray for him and his family.”

No one spoke on Montoya’s behalf.

Montoya flashed a smile at KREM 2 cameras before being taken out of the courtroom.
