SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) -- The Spokane City Council said it will consider an ordinance to crack down on bikini baristas that wear less than bikinis.

Councilman Mike Fagan proposed an ordinance that would give the nearly nude baristas a choice to either wear more clothing or move their business elsewhere. Fagan said he wanted to be clear that he has no problem with bikini baristas as long as they are not wearing less than what he fears the public may consider indecent exposure.

"This goes a little above and beyond what the general public needs to be exposed to," Fagan said.

Fagan also pointed to KREM 2 News' own previous story on bikini baristas that made him look into the ordinance.

"The fact that you [KREM 2 News] couldn't show actual footage," Fagan said. He added that he also had the baristas' safety in mind.

The owner of Triple Xpresso said people do not have to visit their stand if they object to bikini baristas. She added that wearing more clothes does not necessarily mean you are more protected from burns.

Councilman Fagan said that there may even be concerns of health code violations as a food and beverage business.

"You need to wear a hair net," Fagan said, laughing. "The only net I see here in this duty uniform is the fish net stocking."

The owner of Triple Xpresso said there are not any coffee stands that follow that policy.

Fagan said for now he only wants to hear from the public on the issue and will wait two weeks before the City Council takes any action. He added that the ordinance would be specific on what parts of the body need to be covered -- for both men and women.

Espresso stands would also not be his only focus, but any business with a similar dress code.
