SPOKANE VALLEY--Several businesses in Spokane Valley are being told to remove signs outside their buildings because they're not in compliance with city code, but one in particular is fighting back against these changes.
Travel On RV says the banners are a huge part of their business. Manager Robert Schrader says they're not hurting drivers or pedestrians here along South Pines and removing them will definitely hurt their business.
City code says banners can only be attached to a building itself, not the fence, and even then, only one is allowed. They’re also not supposed to stay up permanently.
Schrader says the banners have been up for years, without a single problem.
The city says notices were sent out to all business owners, alerting them to the changes, but Travel On RV says it never received anything. They got a verbal warning last week. A written warning comes next and if the signs don’t come down within 30 days the company would be issued a $500 fine.
At least five other businesses are also being told to remove signs and Schrader hopes they too will get involved in this fight. He intends to be at the next city council meeting, on Tuesday, in hopes of finding some middle ground.
