SPOKANE, Wash. -- The Spokane City Council is set to start considering an ordinance to restrict how much skin employees of certain businesses can show.
Councilman Mike Fagan shared nearly 50 letters and e-mails he has received from citizens concerned about baristas showing too much skin. Other City Council members say this is not a city priority and it is not the best use of police resources.
The proposed ordinance identifies specific body parts that should be covered; including how much of that body part can be exposed in public areas. Other Council members do not want to see police resources going toward checking out how much clothing a barista is wearing.
“Are these sorts of businesses my favorite kind of businesses in the City of Spokane? No. Do I think we should be paying police officers to be inspecting them all the time? Also No,” said Councilman Jon Synder.
The owner of one chain of bikini barista stands said she is having her employees dress in nearly nude clothing more often than normal because that owner is worried about what the council might do.
The council will likely vote on the proposal next week and take public comment at that time.
