SPOKANE, Wash.--Murder suspect Jeremy Arnold was married to his wife, Stephanie, for eight years before her death. Arnold spent much of that time in prison according to friends. Some of the couple’s friends painted Jeremy Arnold as a gentle giant while others painted him as a monster.

Jeremy Arnold was killed Tuesday after he showed up on the scene of a murder near Jackson and Standard. Police said he was a suspect in the murder case. Jeremy Arnold got out of his car with what appeared to be a gun and police shot and killed him.

Friends of Jeremy Arnold said he was misunderstood. Others said Jeremy Arnold’s death brought new light to what they always suspected. That suspicion was that his former wife’s drowning death may not have been an accident.

Stephanie Arnold’s death was a tragic blow to her family and friends. She drowned in the Spokane River in July of 2013.

People close to Jeremy Arnold were concerned for his two-year-old daughter, who lost both parents in less than a year.

“I feel like he was a sociopath. It's easier to breathe now. There was definitely an uneasy feeling with Jeremy,” said an anonymous person close to the couple.

That person told KREM 2 News they wanted to keep their identity concealed. They said they became close with Stephanie Arnold while Jeremy was in prison. They said Jeremy Arnold cut the friendship off when he got out of prison.

“I know there was instances of drinking and driving he really wasn't the fatherly type,” said the friend.

Records showed Jeremy Arnold was at the scene when his wife drowned in the river.

At the time of the incident, authorities said the Jeremy told them that the couple had been drinking and bet each other they could swim across the river. He said his wife went under water shortly after they started swimming and started floating downstream.

“I feel like ultimately Jeremy did have some responsibility,” said the person. “There was discussion that they were talking about divorce...so it didn't really seem to piece together that they would be out having fun.”

Some of Jeremy Arnold’s friends shed a different light on the man with a troubled past. One woman said she believed Jeremy Arnold was a good father. She said he often took his daughter on boating trips and sledding at Mt. Spokane. The woman also said she did not believe Jeremy Arnold would be capable of murder.

KREM 2 News spoke with Stephanie Arnold’s stepmother after police shot Jeremy Arnold on Tuesday. She said she had no comment on his death but was thankful that her granddaughter was safe.

There was no word on Wednesday on where the little girl would live.
