SPOKANE COUNTY -- Trent Avenue was blocked off for several hours Saturday while emergency crews responded to a serious head-on crash.

It happened around 8:00 p.m. Saturday on Trent between Starr and Harvard Roads, east of Spokane Valley.

Spokane County Sheriff’s deputies say 30-year-old Kenneth E. Payne was headed west on Trent and was trying to pass a car in front of him. His Toyota Corolla slammed head-on into a Subaru Legacy driven by 67-year-old William A. Nichols.

Deputies said one of the drivers had to be extricated from his vehicle and was rushed to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Both Payne and Nichols were transported to Sacred Heart Medical Center.

28-year-old Jennifer Osborn was a passenger in Payne’s vehicle. She was also injured. Osborne was transported to Valley Medical Center.

Both vehicles were totaled, and were hauled away from the area just before 11:30 p.m.
The crash is still under investigation.
