FAIRCHILD AIR FORCE BASE, Wash-- Military leaders cancelled Skyfest 2013 on Monday afternoon. Air Force leaders cited budget cuts stemming from the sequestration as the reason for cancelling the air show.
Skyfest was scheduled for May 18-19. U.S. Air Force leaders said that they were directed to cancel all open houses and air shows because of the budget cuts.
The Air Force Thunderbirds cancelled all performances after April 1 due to lack of funding according to Fairchild leaders. The Thunderbirds were supposed to be the headlining act for Skyfest.
“Team Fairchild is disappointed to have to cancel Skyfest 2013,” said Col. Brian Newberry, 92nd Air Refueling Wing commander. “We appreciate the continued support of our Inland Northwest neighbors and wish that we could provide this first class aerial event for them.”
Fairchild officials said the event was set to be in conjunction with the 75th anniversary celebration of the Lilac Festival.
