SPOKANE, Wash. -- Police said one person was arrested after a stolen vehicle crashed in Southwest Spokane Saturday.

Just before 7 a.m., a man called 911 to report that he had been robbed and assaulted and that his Toyota RAV4 had been stolen near Broadway Foods on W. Broadway Ave.  The responding officer shared a description of the stolen vehicle with all Spokane Police Officers and all Spokane County Sheriff’s Office Deputies, letting them know to be on the look-out for the stolen vehicle.

An officer spotted the stolen RAV4 near the intersection of Sunset and Rustle around 11 a.m.  Police began a pursuit.  Around Lindeke and 13th Ave., authorities said the driver of the RAV4 sped up, lost control of the vehicle, crashed into a utility pole, and fled on foot.

Additional Spokane Police officers responded to the location and a K-9 assisted in the search for the suspect, identified as Dustin A. Spears, 28.  Authorities said Spears jumped into the river near High Bridge Park while trying to escape.

Police said Spears was quickly arrested and faced charges for Eluding, Possession of Stolen Property and a DOC warrant.

Additional charges were expected.
