SPOKANE, Wash-- A retrial for a man convicted of murdering his girlfriend and unborn child began Wednesday.
The defendant, John Lipinski, received a 31-year sentence in 2005 for tossing Melissa Saldivar from a moving vehicle. A judge granted him retrial because the original jury selection was not open to the public.

Saldivar’s ex boyfriend took the stand Wednesday, saying he heard Lipinski threaten to kill Saldivar the night of the murder. He added that there was a lot of drinking that night.
“At the time you heard Mr. Lipinski make the threatening statement to Miss Saldivar, you didn’t take it seriously?” one witness was asked. “No, sir,” the man replied.
The defense planned to call witnesses over the two-week trial to refute the testimony. Lipinksi may also take the stand in his own defense.
Lipinski has maintained his innocence, saying he would never do anything to hurt his girlfriend.
