ST. MARIES, Idaho -- The Race The Joe event has now been cleared to move ahead as planned. The event was initially shut down by the Coast Coast in early March.
The race was cancelled after at least one person voiced concern that the boats may damage eagles' nests on the shoreline. The Coast Guard then refused to provide a permit until a lengthy study was conducted. Governor Otter announced Tuesday that the concerns had been addressed and the race was a go.
"We're excited," said racer Terry O'Keefe, "Got the hard part done. Now the exciting part: driving the boat. Making it up and back."
Organizers said the event can go forward as long as several additional rules are followed. Those conditions include putting up a fence to keep spectators out of certain areas, and scouting out the course before a race.
