SPOKANE, Wash. – Among the shamrocks and bagpipes at Saturday’s annual St. Patrick’s Day parade, there will be a local school principal.

It’s now an annual tradition thanks to the Friendly Sons of Saint Patrick and Spokane Teachers Credit Union, who host a student essay contest that earns the winner’s school a $1,000 check, and the principal a chance to ride in the parade.

This year’s winner, Steve Barnes, recalls riding as the Principal on Parade a little over a decade ago as the principal at Pratt Elementary. He is now in his 10th year at Holmes Elementary, and this year a fourth grade student wrote a winning essay about him.

Barnes said he wants to engage the student body and let them decide how to spend the check.

“The goal is, ‘what is something we could spend the thousand dollars on that we could all benefit and enjoy,’” Barnes said.
