SPOKANE, Wash.—A gunman robbed the Jitterz Java Coffee Stand in North Spokane Friday night, but it was a pregnant woman who feared she would get arrested.
The gunman made a getaway in a light colored SUV, according to authorities. A pregnant woman and her children were in an SUV that looked just like the suspicious vehicle shortly after the robbery.
The driver, seven months pregnant, was in the car with four children and her pregnant sister.
The women and their kids were headed to do some shopping for their babies when they say an officer mistook them for the armed robber.
“I was really scared. My sister in law said ‘thank goodness I didn't go into labor’,” said the woman.
The woman said she assumed she was being pulled over because one of the kids was jumping around in the back of the car. She said she quickly realized it was a far more serious situation.
The woman said the officer who approached her said her SUV matched the getaway ride of an armed robber who hit up a coffee stand.
“All the lights were in the window. I could see four cops outside on Monroe Street. They had everything blocked off. Cars couldn't go around,” said the woman.
She said it did not take the officer long to realize the women and their kids were some unlikely suspects.
“He said ‘I'm so sorry you ladies relax, drink some water and let the adrenaline flow back through’,” said the woman.
The woman said she understands the police had a job to do.
The search for the robber was ongoing on Monday night. Spokane police were actively seeking tips.
Spokane Police told KREM 2 News they were doing whatever they could to catch the armed robber. They said that does include looking into vehicles that match the suspect vehicle. They said they were dedicating detective manpower into getting the robber locked up.
