SPOKANE, Wash. -- Police took a man into custody suspected of shooting another man in Browne's Addition Tuesday night near the Pacific Terrace Apartments.

Officers began searching the area around 6 p.m. near Pacific and Hemlock.  The victim was taken to the hospital with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound behind his ear.

Police quickly barricaded the area.  Through the night, they kept pushing neighbors back and asked them to go inside for safety.

Police found the suspect hours later near 13th and Coeur d’Alene. They say he called his family and admitted to the shooting. Police were led to his location soon after that call. Police found him walking near the park and took him into custody without incident.

A witness said he saw Werle and the victim shoving each other and then heard the gunshot.  Investigators said the victim works in some capacity at the apartment complex and Werle was a tenant. They believe the shot was the result of a longstanding fight between the two men. The victim told police he was getting in his truck when Werle opened the door and shot him in the head.

Werle has been charged with first-degree assault. Additional charges are pending. Werle has been arrested several other times for weapons and assault violations.
