COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho -- The Camp Sweyolakan PaddleFest canoes were scheduled to complete their long journey on Lake Coeur D’Alene Thursday.
PaddleFest organizers expected the boaters to return to Camp Sweyolakan in Mica Bay around 1 p.m., although weather-related delays meant the return would not happen until sometime later.
The canoe trip started Sunday, September 8th at the camp. Alumni and volunteers paddled the 104 mile length of the Coeur d’Alene lake shore using the original war wood/canvas canoes first purchased by the camp in 1924.
The journey has been led by former staff members at Camp Sweyolakan in their 60’s. A 101-year-old woman who made the trip in the 1920s was also on board one of the canoes for part of this year's PaddleFest.
